Over the counter and dermatologist recommended skin lighteners contain many chemicals that can be harsh on the skin. They can cause serious allergic reactions and they can cause blemishes.
Many women wish to find something that won’t cause allergic reactions or skin blemishes. Here are a few homemade skin lightening creams that will work to help keep skin looking lighter and more youthful and they won’t break the bank.
Yogurt And Lemon Juice
Plain old fashioned yogurt is often touted as a miracle drug. Great for many skin conditions it makes an ideal base for a skin lightener cream. Here’s a great recipe to try.
Add 8 to 9 drops of fresh squeezed lemon juice (lemon is an excellent skin lightener) to one generous tablespoon of yogurt. If fragrance is desired, add in a drop or two of rose, lavender (be careful, many are allergic to lavender oil) , vanilla or jasmine oil. Mix well and allow to sit for a few minutes so that everything settles.
Apply this mixture generously to your face and neck prior to bed. Leave on overnight so that the soothing cream will work on your skin and neck areas.
In the morning, rinse off with tepid water and a mild soap (if desired). Pat dry with clean dry fluffy cloth. This mixture can also be used as a mask and left on for about 40 minutes if desired. Rinse with tepid water and gently pat dry with a clean fluffy towel.
Most people don’t use enough sun block. Be generous with sunblock and the sun will be kind to your skin. Apply liberally to all exposed areas of skin and reapply often. If you go for a swim, reapply immediately upon getting out of the water. Sunblock will protect skin from harmful UV rays and prevent burns and skin darkening.
Okay, this one may sound a bit odd, but it really does work. Instead of those expensive skin lightening creams, apply some tomato puree to your skin. Leave it on for about 20 to 30 minutes and rinse off. Gently pat skin dry. The acids in tomato will help to lighten skin.
Honey And Lemon Juice
Mix equal parts of honey and lemon juice and liberally apply to face and neck. This can be used as a night cream and rinsed off in the morning, or it can be left on for 20 to 30 minutes and rinsed off. Never scrub when rinsing creams off of the face and neck area. Always gently pat skin dry with a clean fluffy towel.
Aloe Vera Gel
Many keep aloe vera plants on hand for burns, but did you know that it’s great for skin lightening as well? Simply break open a leaf and generously apply the sticky gel to your face. Leave this on for up to half and hour and rinse well with cool water. Gently pat skin dry with a clean fluffy towel.
Dried Orange Peel And Yogurt
Dry those orange peels and get an extra use out of them. After they are completely dry use a mortar and pestle and pound them into a powder. Add this to one tablespoon of plain yogurt and make a paste.
Apply generously to skin and leave sit for 20 to 25 minutes. Rinse off and gently towel dry with a clean fluffy towel. Bonus: This mixture also helps to refine skin, remove blackheads and clear up blemishes.
Yogurt, Tomato And Oatmeal Mask
Yogurt is a wonder drug when it comes to complexions. Again, use one tablespoon of yogurt, one tablespoon of tomato juice and a teaspoon of oatmeal. Make into a paste and apply liberally to face and neck. Leave on for 20 minutes and allow to dry.
Rinse and gently pat face and neck dry with a clean fluffy towel. Yogurt will help to clear blemishes, moisturize and oatmeal is a natural exfoliant. The tomato juice will also work with the yogurt to lighten skin.
Dry Milk, Honey And Lemon Juice
Combine one teaspoon of dry milk, one teaspoon of honey and one teaspoon of lemon juice and apply liberally to face and neck area. Leave on face and neck for 20 minutes. Rinse off with tepid water and gently pat skin dry with a clean fluffy towel.
Milk, Honey And Lemon Juice
Just as above, combine one teaspoon of dry milk, one teaspoon of honey and one teaspoon of lemon juice. Apply generously to face and neck. Leave on for 20 minutes and rise off with tepid water. Gently pat skin dry with a clean fluffy towel.
Good skin care is important to a healthy overall appearance. Many people don’t protect their skin enough from the harsh effects of the summer sun. Skin protection is a must if trying to avoid darkening and hoping to lighten skin.
Wear a sun hat in the sun. Use one of the above treatments at least once per week and always wear plenty of sun screen on all exposed skin whenever going out of doors.
Caution: Never exceed the amounts of lemon juice as this can cause allergic reactions to those with sensitive skin.
Also be aware that some oils (jasmine, lavender and others) may also cause allergic reactions. Leave scented oils out if skin is prone to allergic reactions to avoid any possibility of such occurrences.
